Our innovative engine has been fueled by our employees’ creativity and problem-solving skills along with our company’s commitment to industry-leading research and development investments. Research and development (R&D) goes hand in hand with our employees’ commitment to using their creativity and problem-solving skills to develop differentiating solutions for our customers. We’re proud of how our employees work together, share ideas and find opportunities to innovate. That’s the solid foundation that we rely on for exciting growth into a bright future.
The importance of R&D
It’s challenging to maintain an edge in an increasingly competitive environment, where defense and commercial original equipment manufacturers’ budgets are under pressure, and new competitors are constantly entering the market with disruptive technologies. We meet this challenge by annually dedicating approximately 20 percent of our revenues to R&D—both company and customer funded.
As a result of this sustained commitment, preproduction engineering investments made about a decade ago are paying off. In fact, approximately 75 percent of our investments for captured positions on key programs are behind us, and more than 90 percent of the revenue is in front of us. This will play an important role in accelerating our growth for years to come, making this an exceptional time to join our team.
It’s (practically) rocket science
Whether it’s the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) camera lens for the Jupiter Mission 2011 or lenses for the Mars Exploration Rover, our in-house space optics fabrication and precision assembly capabilities provide cost-effective manufacturing to meet our customers’ space requirements.
Our TELDIX® Space Wheels deliver the ultimate in advanced satellite stabilization in nearly 350 launched satellites, representing more than 7,300 years of in-orbit operation. So if worlds beyond our own fuel your imagination, a career at Rockwell Collins could be a great fit.
10X Innovation Program
Rockwell Collins’ success today and into the future requires an innovative and engaged team, but not every idea can be considered in our formal planning process. Our Advanced Technology Center (ATC) sponsors the 10X Innovation Program, which gives every employee the opportunity to propose a new technology solution that could create a revolutionary improvement to our company’s capability or competitiveness. The projects span several idea-stimulating categories, including:
- 10X improvement to an existing product or system
- Significant cost avoidance
- High-risk ideas creating high-payoff business potential
In addition to receiving ideas from employees and customers for new products, the ATC collaborates with government research and academic institutions so you can be sure that our dedication to innovation will continue well into the future, providing significant opportunities for career growth and exciting new advancements and discoveries.
